Eyo Festival

The Eyo Festival is a Yoruba festival that takes place in the Nigerian capital of Lagos. The Eyo Festival is a major tourist festival and due to its intriguing history, it takes place on Lagos Island.

During the festival costumed dancers known as masqueradesthat perform magically to the delight of the enthusiastic crowds.

This festival was the main forerunner before the Brazilian carnival came on stream. Lagos’s main highway closes from Carter Bridge to Tinubu Square, allowing for the procession of white-clad Eyo masquerades from Idumota to Iga Idunganran Palace.

These white-clad Eyo masquerades clearly represent dead spirits.

A week before festivities commence, the Adimu who are senior members of the Eyo Group go public with a staff and this clearly means that this must see festival will take place on the following Saturday.

If it is your first time in Nigeria, this is a very interesting festival to experience.
